PHRASALS: He put out the fire.

En anglès hi ha un tema que poca gent gosa abordar amb profunditat. És el dels phrasal verbs o phrasals.

Els phrasals són verbs que porten preposicions o adverbis afegits amb els quals canvien el seu significat. Aquest canvi pot ser superficial o molt profund. No volem entrar en la sintaxi o en la semàntica d’aquests verbs, perquè en podeu trobar tota la informació a la xarxa.

El nombre de phrasals és, a la pràctica, infinit i una classificació definitiva d’aquests verbs ha fracassat, en la nostra opinió. També és veritat que, segons els generativistes, és impossible d’escriure la gramàtica completa d’una llengua.

Per tant, què pretenem en aquest petit article? L’únic que farem és presentar alguns phrasals que són equivalents a verbs anglesos d’origen llatí.

Els phrasals són més col·loquials i s’usen més en la conversa. Els llatinismes, en general, solen ser més propis del llenguatge escrit. Nosaltres creiem que sense un bon coneixement dels phrasals més comuns és molt difícil parlar, o inclús entendre un anglès genuí.

Veiem només alguns d’aquest verbs amb el seu equivalent llatí i amb un exemple.

Back out of	Several people backed out of their treatment. Diverses persones van abandonar el seu tractament.	Abandon
Call for	This act of aggression calls for immediate response. Aquest acte d'agressió demana una resposta immediata.	Necessitate
